Tooth Fairy free essay sample
In the balmy summer night air, a shadowed figure sat motionless. As I approach, I see the personââ¬â¢s profile; she is looking up at the stars. It is a common activity for us, to just sit and watch the stars shining upon the grass surrounding our home for the last month. I come up and sit next to her. We sit silently for a while, then I ask, ââ¬Å"Do you believe in the Tooth Fairy?â⬠I wake up to someone calling my name in a soft whisper, ââ¬Å"Andrea, Andrea.â⬠As I stir, I reach under my pillow and grope around for my watch. Groggily I look at the time, only ten oââ¬â¢clock, one hour after the girls go to bed. Sitting up, I take care not to bump my head on the low ceiling; in hindsight it wasnââ¬â¢t the smartest idea to take a top bunk in a cabin meant for preteens. We will write a custom essay sample on Tooth Fairy or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page ââ¬Å"What is it, Abby?â⬠She had been getting homesick for the past couple nights, making me wonder if she is homesick again. ââ¬Å"I lost my tooth and my mouth is bleeding!â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh.â⬠My brain freezes for a second, what to do, what to doâ⬠¦.oh yeah, wash out the blood, itââ¬â¢ll stop soon enough. ââ¬Å"Ok Abby, letââ¬â¢s go to the bathroom so we can see your tooth.â⬠We walk quietly out of the cabin, I donââ¬â¢t want to wake the other girls, itââ¬â¢ll be ages before we can get them back to sleep. The door creaks open, one increment at a time, until a sliver of bright yellow light falls upon the floor, just enough space for both of us to squeeze out into the center room. We walk unseen past the counselors in the center room, not that it matters; if a counselor in training canââ¬â¢t handle a lost toothâ⬠¦.In the bathroom I get Abby to open her mouth to see where her tooth came from, then wet a bit of paper towel. ââ¬Å"Leave this ov er the hole till it stops bleeding a bit. Now letââ¬â¢s see that tooth.â⬠Iââ¬â¢d forgotten just how small baby teeth are. ââ¬Å"So Abby, are you going to leave it under your pillow for the Tooth Fairy?â⬠ââ¬Å"No, ââ¬Ëcause the Tooth Fairy doesnââ¬â¢t exist!â⬠Iââ¬â¢m surprised at that; I thought little kids tended to believe in the Tooth Fairy. ââ¬Å"What makes you say that?â⬠ââ¬Å"My dad comes in as the Tooth Fairy when Iââ¬â¢m awake flapping his arms.â⬠Oh. That would do it. Well then. ââ¬Å"I wouldnââ¬â¢t be so sure. I bet youââ¬â¢ll have some money under your pillow in the morning.â⬠We go back to the cabin, once again passing the counselors. ââ¬Å"Ok Abby, time for you to go to bed otherwise youââ¬â¢ll be all tired tomorrow morning. And put your tooth under the pillow and see what happens, hm?â⬠The next morning, I wake up at five, two hours before anyone else stirs. I know I have some money stashed in a boo k in my luggageâ⬠¦now to find it. I root around my ten or so books, I really should have brought a few lessâ⬠¦ah there it is. Letââ¬â¢s seeâ⬠¦a twenty, a ten, a five, another fiveâ⬠¦donââ¬â¢t I have any ones Guess not, itââ¬â¢ll be a five then, lucky girl. My heart beats a little faster as I look around to make sure no one is waking up, then tiptoe next to Abbyââ¬â¢s bunk. Carefully, carefullyâ⬠¦slipping my hand just under her pillow, placing a five there. Oh no, sheââ¬â¢s stirring! I quickly retreat up my bunk and attempt to calm my rapid heartbeat. Now to see what happens in the morningâ⬠¦.well two hours anyway. Two hours later, I get up to take a shower, and when I get back, everybody is up. ââ¬Å"So Abby, is your tooth still there?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, and guess what!? I got SEVEN dollars!â⬠Oh. Guess I did have some ones after all. ââ¬Å"Really? See I told you the Tooth Fairy exists! What are you going to do with the tooth?â⬠â â¬Å"Keep it till I get home then put it under my pillow for more money!â⬠Devious kid. I like it. On the porch, there is a pause. ââ¬Å"So, do you believe in the Tooth Fairy?â⬠ââ¬Å"Does it matter if I do or not? Itââ¬â¢s not like I have any more teeth to lose.â⬠ââ¬Å"No it doesnââ¬â¢t. Just wondering.ââ¬

Demons, Daemons and Daimons
Demons, Daemons and Daimons Demons, Daemons and Daimons Demons, Daemons and Daimons By Maeve Maddox The three English words demon, daemon, and daimon all derive from Greek à ´Ã ±Ã ¯Ã ¼Ãâ°Ã ½ (daimà ´n), the word for a spirit that served as a link between the human and divine spheres. Daimons could be benevolent or malevolent. They were much lower in the divine hierarchy than gods like Jupiter and Diana. In first century Rome, a good way to make a pagan angry was to refer to all his gods as daimons. In Christian writings the word was used to signify pagan god or unclean spirit. Much later, when the Bible was translated into Old English, demon was rendered as devil. One type of daimon recognized by pagans was a benevolent spirit, a guardian angel that attended the individual from birth to death. This personal genius was a kind of soul. Its presumably the concept of daimon as soul that underlies the daemons of Philip Pullmans His Dark Materials trilogy. Some of Pullmans readers were bothered by the pronunciation of daemon as [dÃâmÃâ¢n] in the movie The Golden Compass (2007). Although Merriam-Webster and the OED indicate that both demon and daemon are pronounced the same, Id guess that many a silent reader has been giving daemon a different mental pronunciation. At least one IMDb commentator declares outright that he plans to pronounce daemon day-mon in order to distinguish Pullmans helpful little soul creatures from malevolent demons. The word daimon [dà «mÃ
n], with the meaning of guiding spirit, is a latecomer to English (earliest OED citation 1852). With its different pronunciation, daimon stands as a possible alternate choice for writers who want the sense of the word without the confusion with demon. Nevertheless, the spelling daemon has its appeal. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Get a subscription and start receiving our writing tips and exercises daily! Keep learning! School Exclusion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
School Exclusion - Essay Example The topic under consideration is school exclusion. In many years the choice of this topic is motivated by a number of good reasons which includes among other things: My experience working directly with young people excluded by schools, on alternative education provision programs puts me in a good position to bring in first hand account into the research work being carried out. In addition, I have worked on projects that are related to social problems such as joblessness, alcohol and substance abuse and its attendant increased crime proliferation. A common trend that was observed among the majority of people that I came into contact with during this period exhibited interesting features that boarded on the subject matter of this research. Almost all the people had a visible form of low level of formal education; they also had a history of unpleasant experiences in the school setting. Finally, it is important to state that current social and political policy places education at the centre for personal and social development, thus making the topic increasingly relevant to our day and age. It is against this background that Mr. Tony Blair former British Prime Minister was quoted as saying "The best defence against social exclusion is having a job, and the best way to get a job is to have a good education' (SEU 1999, Pp6). The Labour Government therefore committed itself to addressing the challenges posed by social inequalities. Consequently, in carrying out research on a topic which is of personal interest to me it is my desire to contribute to the body of existing knowledge in my research sphere and also as a reference point for future research work (Bell 1999 Pg2). Indeed, the question of social exclusion and its attendant ills on the wellbeing of society is of paramount importance to stakeholders and interest groups. Many have therefore called for a well conserted approach to studying and addressing it. Suffice to cite a few statistical data from the 1999 report of the Social Exclusion Unit (SEU) on Truancy and School Exclusion: In the 1995/96 academic year there were 12,500 permanent exclusions; Schools have to report to LEAs fixed-term exclusions (defined as exclusions of between five and a maximum 15 days per term) but the information is not collated. OFSTED estimates there are around 100,000 a year. Some of these may be repeat exclusions of the same child; Most excluded pupils are white, male young teenagers. But a number of groups are disproportionately likely to be excluded; children with special needs are six times more likely than others to be excluded; African-Caribbean children are more than six times more likely to be excluded from the school system; Children in care are ten times more likely; 83 per cent of excluded pupils are boys. 80 per cent are between 12 and 15 and half are 14 or 15; Recent evidence however proves that exclusions at primary ages are rising fast - by 18 per cent as captured in the report; Exclusion rates vary greatly from school to school, but tend to be higher in areas of deprivation; Statistics from the SEU's report Preventing Social Exclusion (2001) sights: Of all rough sleepers only 38% have any educational qualifications; Young runaways are twice as likely to have been excluded from school compared to those who do not

Look on the Bright Side Essay
Throughout everyoneââ¬â¢s life they are surrounded by negative people and their thoughts and numerous negative environments. It is your own choice as to whether you are going to see the world in a positive or a negative aspect. As for myself, I chose to try my best to live my life as an optimist. It is not realistic to say that I am an optimist about every single aspect of my life. However, there are many times in particular where I am optimistic about certain situations. This first situation is when I was born I had clubbed feet. In other words, my feet were turned 180 degrees towards each other. The doctors did not think that I could walk, as I grew older. They were determined to do what they could to get me to walk. I was put through 5 surgeries on each foot, put in casts, orthopedic braces all by the time I was 5 years old. The doctors in the end proved my parents, themselves, and myself wrong, because here I am today walking. By having gone through all this I grew up to see the positive sides of many things such as running and sports and much more because I was not expected to be able to participate in these activities. As I grew up, I had a passion for swimming and playing volleyball. I was on the Varsity Volleyball and Varsity Swim Teams in high school, and could not wait until my senior seasons of my favorite sports. Unfortunately, the third week of my volleyball season I was informed that I had fractured my talus and also had a few stress fractures. At that point I had never been more devastated. Through all the doctor appointments and therapy with my schools trainer I held my head high. I still attended every single game, practice and tournament with my team. I still led them in cheers, and poured my heart to them from the bench. It felt like a knife stabbing through the heart watching from the bench, but I had to be them for them, we were family. This experience helped me learn how to take an extremely difficult time period and put an optimistic spin on it. I wanted to be there cheering for my team, I wanted to see the win and losses. I did not want to be upset and depressed about the situation because there was nothing I could do about it, the only thing I could do was cheer until I had no voice. And thatââ¬â¢s exactly what I did. The last situation that I have is a current situation that I am dealing with. It is my choice as to where I was going to attend school after I graduated high school. I am attending Northern Virginia Community College. This was not my first choice of schools, and I was extremely upset about this at first. I saw my friends leave Manassas and go their separate ways. They did not live with their parents, and had no super vision. Everything that they had, I wanted. But after church on Sunday I was more of thinking than listening to my priestââ¬â¢s homily. But I realized that I have just as much if not more than they do. I appreciated that my parents were allowing me to live with them and pay for my bills and education. I was grateful that I was able to work and make money while still attending school. From there, I was pleased with the decision of attending NOVA. It was just how I perceived the situation.
